Calgary Catholic Immigration Society

Computer Training for Employment

Grant: $ 39,268

This program provides low cost computer training with high quality instruction to low-income learners: Introduction to Windows XP and Internet/ E-mail / Windows Vista, MS Word (foundation), MS EXCEL (foundation), MS ACCESS (foundation), MS Office (advanced), MS PowerPoint, MS Project, Front Page 2000 - Web Page Design / MS Publisher, and Keyboarding. Approximately 90% of the learners in these courses are immigrants or refugees.

Calgary Immigrant Educational Society

Computer Combo Program

Grant: $ 34,548

This program is comprised of two courses: Computer Technology Made Practical and MS Word & Excel. These courses are designed to teach computer skill and knowledge to economically disadvantaged adults in the greater Forest Lawn area. Most course participants are newcomers to Canada. Each 30 hour training provides instruction and hands-on learning activities such as components of a computer, keyboarding, functions of Windows XP, basic Internet, MS Word and Excel.

Calgary John Howard Society

Learning Education Enhancement Program

Grant: $ 53,375

 

 

 

LEEP is an employment program to provide ex-offenders and other disadvantaged individuals with the tools needed to succeed in the workforce. LEEP offers (1) H2S Alive, the safety ticket needed for the oil/gas industry, (2) The Construction Safety Training System ticket with generic WHMIS, and (3) First Aid/CPR. LEEP balances training with sessions on skills for obtaining and maintaining employment. In 2007 the Alternatives to Violence Program (AVP) philosophy was integrated into the LEEP program to further develop communication skills and increase the ability of learners to reintegrate effectively into community.

Elizabeth Fry Society

Bridges Program

Grant: $ 28,640

 

The Bridges Program is a comprehensive fourteen-week program that is designed to meet employment and social needs of women who are or have been in conflict with the law and who face multiple barriers to employment. Building self-esteem and learning life skills in an environment of acceptance is an essential component. Career planning, job preparation and job shadowing are the second main component of the Bridges Program.

CLICK program

EE $ 14,000

The goal of the CLICK program is to facilitate basic computer literacy learning at existing Community Access Program (CAP) sites in five low-income communities. Individuals work with a facilitator to assess their basic computer literacy and then develop an Individual Learning Plan with goals and strategies. Learners receive one to one coaching and support as needed to enhance their online learning to help them, ultimately, achieve their employment goals. HRSD is the main funder and Calgary Learns supports additional staffing costs.

ABC's of Small Business

Grant: $ 50,169

This program offers self employment training for low income Calgarians in three modules: (1) Feasibility Study, (2) Business Plan, and (3) Business Operations. Participants begin their self-employment training with the module that most meets their need. Using the business technical skills, networking opportunities and business coaching offered in this program, participants are able to launch a new business or enhance an existing one.
